The book focuses on changing your starting habits as tiny atomic habits rather than starting big habits and abandoning them after a few days. Imagine all the unused gym memberships, exercise equipment, etc., you bought out of sudden inspiration. The atomic habits preach to start any habit as a small habit. If you want to go for a run every day, don’t think about running a few kilometres. Start by running a few hundred meters as a starting point. Do at least one pushup if you want to do a hundred pushups daily. In this way, even on a terrible day, you can still do that one push-up or do a few-meter run and maintain your habit streak.

You might then wonder, how can small habits change my life in a big way?

Imagine you’re steering a ship across the ocean. If your compass is off by just one degree, it might initially seem insignificant. But after sailing for days, that tiny misalignment could lead you hundreds of miles away from your intended destination. 

 

Similarly, small daily habits  – good or bad – may feel trivial in the moment, but over weeks, months, and years, they dramatically change the course of your life. Imagine what happened to me. I ate a huge dinner late at night, followed by dessert and wine daily. It wouldn’t change me if I had done this behaviour once or twice. But if I do this behaviour every night for a few months, then consequences start showing, including abdominal obesity, nighttime reflux, etc

 

The same is true of good habits. I started to exercise daily, but I was still unfit and obese. I began to eat my dinner early, but I was still the same. After a few months, I was the same, but after a few years, the compound effect of doing the same habit daily has transformed me into a highly fit person 

 

However, the problem is that you don’t see the results immediately, so you tend to give up after a few days or weeks. The crucial point is to keep on the path, as you know it’s the right path. Imagine walking from Melbourne to Sydney, but you can’t see your endpoint. You still know, by using Google maps, etc., that you are on the right path. Just because you can’t see your endpoint, you wouldn’t stop your journey, which applies to your healthy habits
